5-12 pages (depending on group size)

1. Abstract of group project (approx 200 words max)—the abstract will be close to its final draft, but
does not need to be THE final version. (this will be same for each member in your group-work together
on this)

2. Background (approx 1000 words) – an overview that synthesizes the group project for.
Include (work together on this):

a) Context (Why is the topic relevant. How will it advance yours and others
understanding of the issue? Remember to consider why it is of personal interest
to you.)

b) Problem(s) (what are the struggles you have encountered while beginning your
investigation?)

3. Research Questions (this is individual--but of course get member feedback and suggestions).
This is where each group member sets up their individual research as one component of the overall
group research project. Each group member should discuss their topic and develop a specific
research question:

• group member 3
• group member 4 (if applicable)
• group member 5(if applicable)


4. Research Methods (approximately 1-2 pages), i.e. interviews, field research,
observation, library research, expert opinions/interviews, case studies, etc. etc.

Think about why each method chosen is appropriate for the  research. What are the limitations of each
method. How will the information collected inform your project/be helpful to your
project? What biases and what assumptions do you bring to the project

If you are developing any survey or interview questions, include them in this section.

5. Cultural Sensitivity i.e. ethical research: discuss 1) your methods for
recruiting (interview) subjects, and 2) measures taken to guarantee
confidentiality and anonymity. (approx 500 words?)

6. Daily research schedule while in Berlin. This will be a tentative schedule. You
may have both group and individual schedules. This schedule will probably be adjusted,
but good to start planning now. Think about:

• People (names, titles, etc.)
• Places (address)
• Equipment you'll need
• Information you will gather

7) Your reference list at this point (bibliography)

8) All work to be completed and submitted (post on your blog) by midnight 12 June 2008

Groups will present their preliminary project proposals to the class on June 5.
